Although time consuming, the soap making process is relatively simple. All our soaps are cold-processed; that is, everything is mixed at exactly 95 degrees. Oil and lye (sodium hydroxide) are matched so that all the lye is saponified (converted into soap). Now you’re probably wondering, “Lye! Isn’t that caustic?” Well, in actuality, all soap is made with lye. It is impossible to make soap without it. During the saponification process, a fat (vegetable oil) is hydrolyzed with an alkali (lye) to form soap and glycerol. The difference between today’s soap and the soap of old, is that we are able to balance the soap’s PH by accurately measuring the amount of lye used.
A batch of soap takes about a month to complete. Most of this time is used for drying. Once dry, each batch is cut into 4oz bars in a way that creates a unique, homemade appearance and texture. Packaging is simple and the savings are passed on to you, the customer. We pride ourselves on creating a low cost, high quality soap that lasts.
